Debunking the Myth of the Apple Tax

Apple products are generally no more expensive than the competition. So why does this myth persist?

There has been the believe that Apple charge a premium for their products and services for a long while now. This phenomenon was dubbed the Apple Tax back in the 2000s. While it might have been the case at some point in time, I don’t think it’s the case at all anymore. I would argue for what you get with Apple, the pricing is mostly reasonable. Mostly. In this article I want to show you that Apple actually offer great value for most of their products. We’ll also look at why I think this Apple Tax myth persists to this day and why Apple perpetuate it. Let’s start with arguably Apple’s most important product, iPhone.

When people think of the natural competitor to iPhone, Samsung’s Galaxy S series line-up comes to mind. So, let’s see how the latest smartphone from Samsung compares to iPhone in terms of value. There are a few different models for both Samsung Galaxy S21 and iPhone 12. To keep things simple, I’m going to look at the normal iPhone 12, which has 5G connectivity, and the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G. Matching the specifications as much as possible, the Samsung Galaxy S21 comes in at £949 while iPhone 12 comes in at £849. The Samsung smartphone is a more feature rich device, so I don’t suggest it is overpriced. And neither is the iPhone.

Now, you can argue that both of these phones are overpriced, to which I’d say you have to consider the cost of support services and software development. On the former, Samsung and Apple have exceptional support services for their smartphone customers. If you look at OnePlus, a more budget friendly company, they just don’t have the same level of support for customers as Apple or Samsung. Apple’s software for iPhone has also grown leaps and bounds over the last few years. We have features like Handoff, Airpods automatic device switching and AirPlay to name a few.
