The Day My Teacher Called Me A Damn Drunk

That was such a sad and painful day for me.

I played the flute in the high school marching band. I had heard comments about some band members getting a “mental block.” I didn’t understand it. They said they would just forget their steps while performing on the field.

And then one day it happened to me. I was in the middle of our band performance at a football game, and all of a sudden I didn’t know where I was. The students who were marching next to me started turning a different direction, and I was supposed to be with them. But I didn’t know where they were going!! I just started running after them. Then they turned again, and I was just following behind them. I couldn’t remember what I was supposed to be doing.

Then suddenly, my memory just snapped back into place and I stepped into my routine and continued the program.

After the performance, I was so panicked about what the band director was going to tell me. I could hear him from a distance saying, “Where is she. Where is she?”

I immediately knew he was referring to me. I tried hiding behind other students, but he finally saw me. He came straight at me with so much anger and started screaming at me. He said, “What happened? What were you doing out there? It looked like someone had let a damn drunk loose on the field.”

Oh my God. I was so hurt and embarrassed and was feeling so guilty about my performance. I cried that whole night after I got home.

After that day my performances were all perfect for the rest of the season. But that was a really bad experience for me.

When my kids were in marching band, I prayed that they would never have to go through that. I would get so nervous before each of their performances. Thank God they never did.
