Why Men are Suffering in Silence

When ladies have problems, they talk to each other. They have ice cream, drink some wine, bitch together and figure it out within their support systems. Who do men talk to? Are men burdened with lack of sharing?

Without home cooked meals and parents watching over your diet it’s your responsibility, as a college student, to make sure you are eat properly and take care of your body. It’s very hard to avoid bad eating habit such a skipping meals, or constantly going to fast food restaurants. Let’s be honest. Grabbing a burger and fries is much easier than preparing a meal and washing dishes, or making your own salad at the salad bar in the dining hall. But, eating healthy allows you to care for your body. Along with that, help you preform well in school and manage the stress that comes with being a student.

I got the chance to speak with Michael DiBiasi, the Campus Dietitian at Marquette University, to further elaborate on eating healthy in college. He explained to me the benefits of eating healthy, such as better concentration, regulated blood sugar, prevents the risk of disease as we get older, and helps maintains muscles. If we are not being healthy, like eating poorly and skipping meals, we can loose muscle and our own nutrients. This causes us to feel more fatigue. Mr. DiBasi gave some insight on what a college student’s diet should consist of. Throughout the day we should be eating more whole grains, carbohydrates, and fibers. These help maintain even energy source, and provide nutrients we need. For example, whole grain bread, brown rice, or whole wheat pasta. We should also be eating five servings of fruit and vegetables a day. They help fight diseases, and are low in calories. Consuming lean protein and plant based protein is also good for your body. When it comes to snacking, Mr. DiBasi gave some great suggestions. Things that are low in excess sugar and high in nutrients, such as greek yogurt with granola, granola bars, trail mix, fruit, nuts, cheese, nut spread and pretzels, fruits. It’s also good to combine snacks that have different components.

It’s important to remember that there are resources on campuses available if you need help planning better eating habits. Always be mindful on how you choose foods. If on the meal plan, move between stations in dining hall. Don’t focus on the same area. Try to incorporate different items to increase nutritions and flavor of the food. For students not on meal plans, do not go shopping hungry or else you will buy unhealthy items. Try to shop for whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
