The Bird, A Man, And A Song

I did a strange thing today. The opportunity was there, and the desire to do it was one that I could not resist. While out watering the shrubs and trees in our yard, I spied a bird on a branch of our pine tree. What kind of bird one might ask, but you would have posed that question to the wrong person. It was not one familiar to me.

This unknown type of bird was on a lower branch at eye level and within a few feet of me. I was holding a garden hose in my hand and had started spraying it in the general direction of her tree, but now deliberately keeping the water away from her.To my surprise, she did not immediately fly away, maybe she was struck immobile by her own surprise at our closeness.

Then an urge came over me, and at first it led me to talk softly to the bird, as if I could engage it in conversation. For some reason, it became important to me that the bird tarry at least a moment longer. Then what happened next was hard to explain, I who am rarely spontaneous, started humming softly, then escalated to singing words that tried to express my joy at the gift that she was giving me by her presence. Amazingly in this world where so few take the time to really pay attention and hear what someone is trying to say, never mind allowing another to touch their spirit, this bird, this glorious part of God‘s creation, deigned to listen to me.

Feeling more content and thankful than I had in some time, and not wanting to see the bird fly away, I was the one who moved on first.
