How the Craft Beer Revolution Became an Excuse for My Addiction

Was I an addict or a connoisseur?

Over the past decade, craft beer has exploded in popularity across the United States.

Hundreds of local breweries have popped up, and even many small towns can rightfully brag about their booming craft beer scenes.

Unfortunately, as the nation was falling in love with artisanal brews, I was falling in love with drinking in general. The craft beer revolution coincided perfectly with my personal descent into alcohol addiction.

For beer connoisseurs, the boon was a long-awaited blessing. For me, it was just another excuse I used to enable my addiction.

When I first started drinking, craft beers were almost entirely off my radar.

Although I had a few hip friends who enjoyed fancier drinks, I mostly stuck with Bud Light.

In the earlier years of my addiction, I went through insane amounts of this cheap beer with relatively low alcohol content. I could easily finish off a twelve-pack, night after night.

At the time, it was already clear to me that I was drinking too much, but I was still in college, and I wrote it off as a typical young adult phase.

When I graduated and the drinking continued, I started to get more concerned. I quit for a few months, but couldn’t convince myself to stay off booze permanently.

That’s when craft beer entered the picture.

I had noticed that new local breweries were opening practically every week, and even the grocery store had started carrying a wide selection of small-batch, craft beers.

I tried them out and quickly fell in love with the taste. Compared to the cheap, mass-produced beer I had been drinking, they really did taste much better.

It didn’t take long before I had abandoned Bud Light completely and switched over to drinking nothing but craft beer.

Suddenly, my drinking habit felt legitimized.
