Reflection Activity

An important point made in Mesch’s article is that the Internet has become a culture where people are opening up and expressing themselves freely online. The online community share their values and interests with others to have a place to feel being. This creates a social platform between people where they do not meet face to face but interact through the Internet. Being one self and sharing their interests online can connect themselves with other people of similar interests. Being themselves openly online helps form a genuine relationship with others through the Internet.

White and Le Cornu’s discuss how technology online was originally to search online for information by using Google which was created before the 2000s. Social media sites started growing in the 2000s which has change how we use the Internet. People use social media websites as a tool to create a place to socialize and express themselves with others online. Our ways to form relationships and to learn are changing now that we are using the Internet to interact and communicate.

My thoughts on the video is that I learned the terms of different types of engagement when using online. Digital native are people who are very young to be able to grow up to understand and learn how to use technology which becomes a natural whenever they are using it. An immigrant is not being very young but are people who are a bit older to be able to learn to adapt in the online world. Being a visitor is using online as a tool to use quickly and then going back offline. Visitors do not leave anything trace of themselves behind when they are either online or offline. Residents are people who engage by presenting themselves by leaving posts, comments, and other activities online. They leave a trace of themselves when they are offline.
