An Overview of Forex and How to Get Started

The foreign exchange or ‘forex’ market is a global marketplace in which currencies are traded. Currency exchange is more important than you’d realise, especially if you travel or purchase goods from other countries. By this, I mean if you’re a British tourist, you cannot spend GBP in South Africa because it is not the locally accepted currency. Therefore, you’d have to exchange the GBP to ZAR (South African Rand), at the current exchange rate.

A significant volume of currency is also traded in interbank markets. This involves all major banks trading currency with one another through electronic networks, thus generating profits from the forex market fluctuations. What’s more, central banks embark on raising its nations’ economy competitiveness by setting the price of its native currency. Because of this, the forex market is easily influenced by geopolitical factors. For example, a central bank may decrease the value of its own currency to obtain additional supplies during a deflationary period.

The forex market is open 24/5 (Monday to Friday).
It opens 6am Sunday (Sydney time) and closes 5pm Friday (New York time).
On average, $5 trillion is traded daily in the forex market.

Being a retail/individual investor is becoming increasingly popular. Retail investors are able to generate profits for themselves by applying a combination of fundamentals (interest rate parity, inflation rates, etc) and technical factors such as support, resistance, and technical indicators while analysing the forex market.
