Reading Log 3

Extensive reading

We read The Silver Chair chapters 5 and 6 in the class. In this reading, the scene where the children meet the giant was the most impressive. While I was reading the scene, I imagined myself passing by the giants with the children breathlessly. It must have been really scary and horrible. They tried not to look at the giants, but if I were one of them, I would have made eye contact with them because I couldn’t just pass the curiosity.

Chapter 6: Comprehension Questions

1. What were the giants doing when Jill first saw them? Why were they throwing boulders?

They ignored Jill because they were throwing boulders when she saw them. And they entertain themselves by throwing boulders.

2. What did the giants do when they were quarreling? What made them stop?

They stormed and jeered at one another in long, meaningless words of about twenty syllables each. And then they lammed each other on the head with great stone hammers, but their skulls were so hard that the hammers bounced off. Because they’re quite stupid, they do the same thing after a while. And by the end of an hour, all the giants were so hurt that they sat down and began to cry.

3. What did they see when they came to the northern edge of the moor?

They saw a long, steep slope into a different, and grimmer land. Below the slopes were cliffs, beyond which high mountains and dark cliffs, stony valleys, deep and narrow canyons and rivers that poured out of echoing gorges

4. What did the bridge look like?

It certainly looked solid enough. The single stones were as big as those at Stoneenge, cracked and broken. The balustrade had been covered with many carvings, of which some traces remained; mouldering faces and forms of giants, minotaurs, squids, centipedes, and dreadful gods.

5. What did the two strangers and their horses look like?

One was a knight in a suit of armor with his visor down. His armor and his horse were black. The other was a lady wearing a long green fluttering dress on a white horse. She identifies herself as She of the Green Kirtle.

6. Where did the road lead? Why did the lady advise them to stop there for the winter?

The road leads to the burgh and castle of Harfang, where the gentle giants live. It seems to advise them to stay there for their comfort and refreshments. There are beds, steaming baths, stoves, and food for them to relax.

7. Why did the lady warn them?

She warned them not to come too late at the door when they arrived at Harfang. Because it is the custom of the castle that they close the gates after a few hours of noon, and no one opens once they close, so they cannot enter.

8. How did things get worse after the talk with the lady?

It got worse in two different ways. First, the land was so much harder that they faced a very harsh and difficult situation in the moor. And second, the real effect on the children was a bad one. Because of what the lady said to them, they could only think of beds, baths, food, and not about Aslan or the lost prince.

Group reading

Among the several articles, ‘5 Money Lessons For Your Grandchild’ was the most interesting for me. Actually, I read financial articles for the first time, and I thought this article covers almost all ages. Because we will become parents and grandparents in the future. As I read this article, I found that it’s an article that not only grandparents but also parents should read this article. These days, more and more children seem to be wasting money or not spending it wisely because they didn’t learn how to manage money properly when they were young. Therefore, I believe that adults have a duty to educate children about financial matters from an early age. Especially, the last part of the article, ‘Teach them to work hard for their money’, is memorable for me. As the article says, it is really important to let children see the working and realize money doesn’t magically appear at once.

Home reading

I read from chapter 7 to chapter of ‘the next person you meet in heaven.’ Annie met a boy named Sameer in heaven, and Annie could not speak yet, but it was amazing that the boy heard the sound of Annie’s heart and talked to each other. He turned into a middle-aged man in a white medical coat. He was there because of a heart attack. The phrase “Never think doctors take care of themselves better than patients.” was impressive among what he said. Most people would think doctors would take good care of themselves, and so did I. But doctors seem to be too busy taking care of patients to take care of their own health.
