Did you know that vacuuming more often helps your floors last longer

I think we all know that vacuuming keeps our floors and our homes cleaner, so it’s a good thing to do…and even more important if you have little ones in the house.

But very few people realize the double benefit of vacuuming. Yes, vacuuming your hardwood floors more often helps them last longer. Why? Well because it’s the little grit that wear down your floors.

Even if you have a little bit of sand and grime, that is getting pushed down into your floor as you (or your pets walk). The dirt may on the ground on your shoes or on your chairs (especially if you have chairs with wheels.

Ironically, sweeping your floors can make them worse as you may sweep the grit into or across your floors. You should either use a canister vacuum or a soft fiber mop (like Swiffer or Bona Microfiber).

The same thing holds true for carpeting. Vacuuming more often will also prolong the life of your carpets. You see the dirt and grit gets pushed down lower in the carpet just from normal foot traffic. And, over time, those fine particles act like tiny pieces of glass and start to wear the carpet fibers down.

I’d recommend that vacuum your hardwood floors and carpet at least once a week. If you have busy traffic areas (e.g. hallways, family rooms, etc.), I consider vacuuming these areas twice per week.

Frequent vacuum cleanings will make your home cleaner, reduce odors and make all of your flooring last longer so it’s a win, win, win.
