Summer Frolicking

How often are we told to get back to work, get that project done, and complete this file, clean up this or that, work work work? Summer though, oh summer you are a glorious time for fretting away time at a nice steady slow pace. Summer is the time for frolicking and fun. Summer is a time to let down our hair, skip stones down at the creek, and play time chasing lightening bugs.

When summer approaches for a child, the anticipation of doing nothing settles in, happiness fills them with wonder of what troubles they may cause, what adventures they will have, what friends they will make, but as an adult summer comes and we need to be told to slow down and enjoy ourselves. Why? When did we lose our sense of wonder? Summer my friend is a time for reconnecting to yourself , showing yourself a little more love, and relearning to have fun.

When summer comes, I like to find a creek to go explore, a lake to float on, and lightening bugs to catch. Summer I let my hair down, no makeup is worn, and a slower pace happens, and I find myself relaxing into the season. I get up a little later on weekends. I try again on the lake to skip stones (I am never getting this right) and I look for tadpoles in the local creeks. I find starfish among the rocks along the ocean’s edge. I find different treasures and fill my window ledges with them. I collect what the season offers and I look at them and wonder about life.

With the sun shining down on my skin, my hair lightening from the sun, and salads eaten even for breakfast, these are the times of new memories being made that will be remembered for the rest of my life. I think the slowness of summer allows us to absorb more emotions and keep them deeper in our minds. We linger longer to enjoy a sunset, we strive to walk along the water’s edge, we hike deep into the tall, tall trees, we listen to all nature has to give us. Summer allows us time to ponder. It allows us a freedom from everyday life even if it is a week or weekend. We drink lemonade and sandwiches on the beach and try to keep the sand out. Summer is filling us with sun, beaches, and good food. It is also filling us with memories.

Summer perhaps means a little bit more to us as an adult. We can linger in the morning, perhaps a facial mask; shopping for seashell necklace (even though we won’t wear it anywhere but the beach) We can grab a coffee and head to sand dunes to ride in a buggy. We can spend the day lounging on a chair and just watching the water. Summer is when we allow ourselves to just be. Be where we want, when we want, doing what we want. Summer is the season of slow, of family, of friends. Summer is where we gather to do nothing. We can chase frogs, lightening bugs, or tadpoles, but we do it with the ease of summer. We laugh when we fall chasing lightening bugs in the dark, we find falling in the water of the creek funny, we enjoy a wave over our heads.

In the spirit of summer, I hope you slow down, make some memories, take many pictures for you to remember it all, and just be. Slow, relaxed, and filled with the summer sun on your skin. Happy Summer all!
