Australian region for Firebase Functions

G’day, mates!

You may have noticed that Australian Internet is shit. Mostly because we’re so far away from the world that latency to default servers for most applications is just terrible.

You may have also noticed that your Firebase functions produce lagged responses or timeouts (mostly the former). It’s because by default when you create a new function, it’s hosted in (us-central1) region. Ping to that server can be as high as 200 in some Australian suburbs, which is definitely not ideal.
