AngelHacks is coming!

Middle schooler or high school in LA looking for a place to meet fellow coders?

Want to get into computer science but your school just doesn’t have the right classes or infrastructure?

AngelHacks, a 12-hour hackathon for middle and high schoolers hosted at Snapchat HQ, is here to help! On October 26 of 2019, we’re giving out software, prizes, and workshops, as well as providing meals and snacks.

Now, this may sound cheesy or cliche, but we’re dedicated to encouraging students to learn computer science — of which is at a low point in Los Angeles.

This school year, just 3% of the 1.9 million high school students in California took computer science classes, and only 1% took an AP course. We just aren’t teaching children computer science!

Hackathons are a great opportunity for students to get into computer science, or to encourage them to start more projects. It enables them to meet others who are interested in similar topics — and form lifelong friendships!

My first hackathon one and a half years ago changed my life. I hadn’t previously planned to pursue computer science, but the hackathon enabled me to meet so many of my fellow peers who were also interested in the same things I was. Now, I want to give back to the community.

We, here at AngelHacks, smackdab in the middle of LA, believe that AngelHacks is the beginning of a long-term solution.

We are the first step in the educational movement to teach more students computer science — especially in LA. Los Angeles is quickly becoming the second Silicon Valley, but we still have a mediocre educational system, especially in terms of technology and computer science.

So, what’s AngelHacks?

We’re a hackathon for the city of Los Angeles, by the students, for the students. We’re a group of students interested in promoting programming — and making.

If you’re a maker, a builder, a coder… an artist, a dreamer, a hacker, this is for you.

Our venue is at Snapchat Headquarters in Santa Monica, and we’re providing meals, snacks, prizes, and workshops. It’s 12 hours long— but you can stay as long as you’d like!

So, if you don’t know anything about programming, come for half a day or a whole day to learn the basics! If you’re already a coding master, come to meet others and win prizes — what can you make in 12 hours?

We’ve got mentors, API demos, and more! No matter who you are, you’re welcome to come.
