Tierra Smith created Black Girl MaJic is an organization was formed to provide a voice for women of color on Cleveland State campus. The organization has topic on range of subjects from race, politics, natural/healthy lifestyles, relationships, sex and etc.

Tasha Shepard opened the discussion of the day with struggles as an African American women in the world today. Tasha Shepard, who is a senior at Cleveland State University is a known speaker at the organizations weekly/bi-weekly meeting.

“we’ve been through a lot as a black women, any women bears a lot of stresses but with black women we have to deal with 10 times more issues than a women not of color” said Tasha Shepard.

Shepard continued speaking on the struggles of being both African American and a women in the workplace. For example, the issues being talked about in America at the moment with women and sexual assault or sexual misconduct allegations.

“This is not to take aim at the white women because they are victims as well but this is again another important topic to talk about within our country. African American actresses in the industry have been targets of sexual assault or misconduct yet there stories are on the back burners for white privileges,” Shepard said.

Tierra Smith decided she wanted to create an organization when she noticed there wasn’t an organization devoted to African American women.

Briana Sickamore, a girl from the panel began backing up Shepard’s statements by talking about mistreatment in the workplace and how white women privilege comes into effect as well.

Sickamore, described the past mistreatment she had endured at the workplace as an early teen. Describing details of being told to do duties out of her bounds while others were treated as if they did not have to do work at all.

“I was told that I needed to talk more with grammatical sense and use not slang at the workplace which I felt I did not. I think my manager pointed me out because I was the only black girl working there and I did have a different dialect from the other staff members” Sickamore said.

She discussed how that impacted the way she looked at life at the moment and how it impacted her self-esteem growing up.

“Growing up I wanted to not necessarily be white but I imitated how white women dressed or carried themselves so that I would not be treated as I was before” Sickamore continued, “I realize now that my black is beautiful and I do not have to alter who I am to fit the norm of society or how white America wants me to be,” she said.

Black Girl MaJic is an organization that is suppose to be a safe haven for African American to vent and dialogue in topic that they feel should be discussed.

“Black Girl MaJic is not to segregate or leave out other races but it just something exclusive to my roots, Smith continued, “ I love being able to discuss things essentially in the black community regarding topics of our culture,” Smith said.

Tierra Smith moved the topic onto “relationships and the complex world of them” which moved into a lighter note.

This discussion topic had more people interacting, discussing the positive and negative of dating.

Smith discussed how she went through many relationships, kissing many frogs until she found her prince.

“I started dating as early as the age of 14, being in simple and childish youthful relationships to more mature ones. I never had any luck in my relationships because the men I dated thought from inside their pants instead of their minds,” she said.

Smith concluded the meeting with a playlist of music and told the group can have refreshments in the back, thanked the crowd for coming this week’s meeting of Black Girl MaJic and talked about meeting times next week will change.
