broken

the earthenware pot my mother owns

is stronger than Ladé

that pot will be sixteen soon

it carries the weight of all the water we use

yet sixteen years is a long time for a weary ol' pot

or is it?



Ladé was married for over a decade

she had no issue

yet she had one issue

the issue was her lack of an issue

she had searched the top of mountains

and the foot of hills

she had crossed the Nile

and drank from the Jordan



“Ladé, be like Sarai,

orí omo shâ ní n pe omo wáyé”

she turned deaf ears to this prattle

she continued her search

and she became a mother.



to a still born



her husband beat her silly one night

her water broke and with it her hope, her life

her dreams, her love

she came by the other night

with her broken pieces

she’s mending them

with the glue called time.
